David Akers (1975/88): The 1890 is a scarce date in all grades. It is considerably rarer than the lower mintage 1889 and is comparable overall to the 1879, 1880 and even the highly regarded 1882. (The 1890 is not nearly as rare, however, as the last three aforementioned dates in uncirculated condition.) Choice mint state specimens are quite rare and true gems are seen so infrequently that they must be considered to be very rare.
