The regular strike Grant with Star is one of the rarest of all United States silver commemoratives. But rarer still is the matte proof striking of the Grant with Star silver half dollar. In fact, the original mintage is supposedly only two coins! PCGS has graded one of these two coins PR64. There are not many proof silver commemoratives of the 1892-1954 classic era. There were 50 matte proof 1928 Hawaiian half dollars struck, and 103 proof 1892 Columbian half dollars were struck. But for the Grant with Star half dollar, there are just two proofs. Obviously, this proof striking is an extreme rarity. But it is a little esoteric, and it is so rare and appears on the market so infrequently, that it really hadsn't had much publicity.
