Charles Morgan:

The 1999 American Silver Eagle

In 1999, the West Point Mint struck 7,408,640 American Silver Eagles — the Mint's highest output since 1987 (#9808) — fueled by Y2K anxieties and aggressive marketing. While apocalyptic fears dissolved on January 1, 2000, modern bullion sales soon eclipsed 1999's figures. It was clear that the American Silver Eagle series had entered a new phase of market interest, overcoming the investor fatigue for the one-ounce silver bullion coin that had taken root in the mid-1990s. Later, as the 2007–2008 global financial crisis set off a nationwide credit slump, demand for the program surged to levels that made the Y2K boom look small by comparison.
