In Bill Bugert's Register of Liberty Seated Half Dollar Varieties, the 1872 WB-1 (#572201) is noted as the first die pairing for the date. It marks the only use of Obverse A and the first of two marriages to feature Reverse A. Reverse A was deployed again on the famous Misplaced Date WB-2 (#572202).
On the WB-1, the date is set slightly to the right, with the point of the shield lining up nearly flush with the right edge of the stem of the 1. A long, thin, diagonal die line is visible on AU and Mint State examples just to the left of Liberty's extended finger.
Diagonal die lines running through leaves 2–4 on the reverse are diagnostic for the variety, but they are mainly visible on higher-grade specimens.
