The 1795 Liberty Cap Cent, S-75
Sheldon-75 (#35718) shares its obverse die with S-74 (#35714), distinguished by the flag of the "5" burrowing into Liberty's bust truncation. The reverse features a double leaf at the top of the right branch, and all leaves—except for the three single leaves below "TE" and "OF" are doubled. "U" and "ST" are cut lower than the surrounding lettering, and there is a notable die scratch extending from the tip of the outer left leaf to below the "E" in UNITED.
Planchet quality is frequently an issue with this variety, with many examples exhibiting pitting or microgranular surfaces, particularly above "ONE."
Walter Breen estimated that the entire mintage of S-75 was executed over just three days.
PCGS records two examples of S-75 in Mint State Red-Brown - the finest of which was repatriated from Europe in the 1990s before entering the prestigious collections of Lawrence Stack and D. Brent Pogue.
