PCGS CoinFacts Update
The classic commemorative coin era famously ended in 1954, but the Padre Junipero Serra Medal poses an interesting "what if." Struck by the United States Mint and dated 1963, the piece was authorized by President John F. Kennedy just weeks before his death. Its strikingly coin-like design foreshadows the mid-century medallic aesthetic that would come to define the Mint’s later works, which is no surprise given it was designed by Frank Gasparro. PCGS Set Registry Update
November 20, 1910, marks the day when the Mexican Revolution began. In previous years, the people of Mexico were unhappy with the leadership of President Porfirio Diaz. A prominent landowner by the name of Francisco I. Madero ran against Diaz during the 1910 presidential election of Mexico. Madero was jailed, inciting public rage and leading to an uprising. Madero soon became president in 1911, and Diaz went into exile. Political unrest seemed to worsen by the day. Madero was assassinated in 1913, and Victoriano Huerta became president. Huerta's tenure lasted a little over a year; he was forced into exile and fled to Spain. It was during these tumultuous years from 1910 through 1914 that the Caballito peso was minted. French sculptor Charles Pillet designed the coin, and refinements were made by engraver Charles Barber of the United States Mint. Shown above is the 1910 Caballito peso that belongs to the 1910 Mexican Year Set that PCGS recently listed.
