CoinFacts Narrative Update

In 1999, the U.S. Mint produced 5,500 Sacagawea Dollars and distributed them to General Mills for a promotion wherein the cereal manufacturer sprinkled one of 5,500 Sacagawea Dollars inside inside random boxes of Cheerios. In 2005, collector Tom DeLorey discovered that some of these 5,500 Sacagawea Dollars featured a slightly different design on the reverse, with detailed veins in the eagle's tail feathers. Ordinary uncirculated and including proof coins lack these fine details on the eagle's feathers. Read more.

PCGS Set Registry Update

Queen Victoria of Great Britain started her reign on June 20, 1837 and sat upon the throne until January 22, 1901. Under her rule, countries continued to be colonized and were added to the British Empire's growing portfolio of territory. Coins were manufactured for Great Britain's colonies, including Hong Kong. The Second Opium War broke out on October 8, 1856, and lasted four years before finally coming to an end on October 24, 1860. China conceded the war to France and Great Britain. The war officially over, the Treaty of Tianjin was signed in 1858, and negotiations were finalized sometime in 1860. The inlands of China were opened up for greater trade to Westerners. Settlements by foreign dignitaries and ambassadors were now permitted, which were part of the newly revised treaties. The Hong Kong Mint was opened on May 7, 1866, by Thomas William Kinder and it closed a little over two years later. Minting for coins of Hong Kong resumed in 1872 bearing the “H” mintmark for the Heaton Mint. Coins that did not carry the “H” mintmark were struck by the Royal Mint in London for most denominations. Coins from this era can be challenging to accumulate in high grades and can be valuable. Proof and specimen coinage from this period of Queen Victoria are highly sought after by collectors like the coin displayed above. This PCGS SP66+ 1892-H 50 Cents with a portrait of Queen Victoria is part of the Hong Kong Victoria 1/2 Dollar & 50 Cents, Proof and Specimen (1866-1892) set we have recently listed.
