Ron Howard: PCGS grading room: Although 'only' an MS60, this coin is nonetheless wondrous because of its rarity and originality. Seemingly plucked from a group of common date ten libs, this fully lustrous example is evenly bagmarked, fully struck and curiously attractive. A remarkable piece!
David Akers (1975/88): The 1876 has the second lowest mintage of any Liberty Head Eagle, just nosing out the 1873 and 1877. In overall rarity, it is on the third level of P-Mint issues, less rare than the 1875 and 1873, but similar to the 1863, 1872 and 1877. In my opinion, business strikes of this date are a little more rare than those dated 1858. Most of the known business strikes are typically well struck with prooflike or semi-prooflike surfaces.
