Charles Morgan:

The 1883 Shield Nickel Proof, JD-2 Variety

The 1883 Shield Nickel Proof, JD-2 (#102828), is a scarce variety of the 1883 proof issue and is one of five varieties enumerated by John W. Dannreuther in United States Proof Coins, Volume II: Nickel (2023). While most examples appearing at public auction in recent years have not been attributed by PCGS or major auction houses, the variety can be identified by key diagnostic "pick-up points" on the 1-B die marriage:

  • Obverse: The digit "8" is centered over the denticles. Heavy "Longacre doubling" is present on the motto. The top of the "D" in the motto is conspicuously broken.
  • Reverse: Longacre doubling absent. Bumps inside the counter of "R."

PCGS will attribute this variety through our Variety Program.
