The 1883 Shield Nickel Proof, JD-4 Variety

The 1883 Shield Nickel Proof, JD-4 (#102834), is the most common variety of the 1883 proof issue and is one of five varieties enumerated by John W. Dannreuther in United States Proof Coins, Volume II: Nickel (2023). While most examples appearing at public auction in recent years have not been attributed by PCGS or major auction houses, the variety can be identified by key diagnostic "pick-up points" on the 2-C die marriage:

  • Obverse: The left edge of the numeral 1's foot aligns with the right edge of the denticle. If you extend an imaginary vertical line to the top of the coin, this same serif aligns with the right edge of the letter E. Additionally, die defects—appearing as bulbous line breaks—are typically found on the 1st, 4th, and 6th columns of the shield.
  • Reverse: Longacre present on (UN)ITED in early die states. Die cracks develop at the top of UNITED. Through ERICA and above NTS
