private collector, acquired in the 1950s; inherited by a great-nephew; As NGC MS62BN CAC #217176-001. Graded between 1990-1993. Heritage Auctions, September 8, 2011, Lot 3006 – $69,000; Jon Alan Boka. As PCGS MS62BN #81233613. “The Jon Alan Boka Collection 1794 Large Cents,” Heritage Auctions, September 8, 2016, Lot 5343 – $51,700; Terry S. DenmanS-58. Die State I. As the finest-known and sole Mint State example of the variety, this specimen eluded the specialist cent community until it surfaced in the early 1990s. Originally acquired from a large collection in the 1950s—likely remaining unattributed at the time—the coin was eventually passed down to the owner’s great-nephew. Upon its auction debut in 2011, the Heritage cataloger remarked that the piece had "never been seen by the current generation of collectors" and had "never appeared in front of any early copper specialists at any time over the last 200 years."

Charles Morgan:

The 1794 Liberty Cap Cent, Sheldon 58, Many-Haired

This variety features a new die marriage, marking the first appearance of Obverse Die 28, which later appears on Sheldon-59 (#35639). The reverse utilizes Reverse Die BB, which is unique to this variety.

Liberty’s hair is characterized as thick and almost clumpy behind the ear, terminating in seven distinct locks. The date is widely spaced, with the numeral 1 nearly touching the bottom of the hair.

Reverse BB features six large berries to the left and seven to the right. The right ribbon tip protrudes further upward than the left, crossing two stem segments. Noyes notes that this variety is consistently found on thick planchets.

A progressive die crack and cud developed on the reverse—explaining the die's eventual retirement—extending from the rim through UNIT.

Numismatic researchers have indicated that this Sheldon variety was likely struck on November 12, 1794.
