The Sheldon 70 (#35693) represents the fourth of six "Head of 1795" 1794 Liberty Cap Cents. This die marriage reuses Obverse 36 from Sheldon 69 (#35690) and introduces Reverse JJ. Key diagnostics of Obverse 36 include a lowest hair lock that forms a distinct small circle, five braided strands, and a double-cut 1 and 7 in the date. Positionally, the top of Liberty’s hair terminates directly below the bottom serif of the "T" in LIBERTY. While some early strikes feature a perfect die, the Sheldon 70 is most frequently identified by a die crack that originates between the "T" and "Y" of the legend and advances downward into the portrait.
The reverse features an unusual double leaf under the "O" in OF and a triple leaf under the "D" in UNITED. The numerator rests just above the slanted fraction bar. There are six berries on the left and seven on the right.
