The 1883 Shield Nickel Proof, JD-5 Variety

The 1883 Shield Nickel Proof, JD-5 (#102837), is a common variety of the 1883 proof issue and is one of five varieties enumerated by John W. Dannreuther in United States Proof Coins, Volume II: Nickel (2023). While most examples appearing at public auction in recent years have not been attributed by PCGS or major auction houses, the variety can be identified by key diagnostic "pick-up points" on the 3-C die marriage:

  • Obverse: If an imaginary vertical line is extended to the top of the coin, the right edge of the stem of the 1 aligns with the left edge of the E in WE. The left edge of the digit's bottom serif is aligned over the right side of the denticle. The denticles are "bitten" (notched) directly under the 1, and prominent "Longacre Doubling" is present throughout IN GOD WE TRUST.
  • Reverse: Longacre Doubling present on (UN)ITED in early die states.

PCGS will attribute this variety through our Variety Program.
