The Sheldon-21 (#35528) is the first 1794-dated Liberty Cap Cent to feature the "1794" head style. Liberty's portrait is less rounded, the relief is lower, and her hair detail is coarser. A prominent arced die crack at the top left of the obverse is useful for identifying the variety; this feature is joined by a second prominent die clash in the upper center of the obverse. Also visible is a clashed die image. The reverse exhibits the tell-tale signs of die rust. A handful of examples survive in Mint State, but none exhibit any significant original red color.
Obverse/Reverse: Obverse 4 and Reverse B.
Diagnostics: The base of the pole is notably flattened and angular, ending in a distinct flat tip rather than a rounded one.
Inscriptions: LIBERTY is widely and evenly spaced.
Strike: The milling (denticles) is typically weak or incomplete, a common trait for this specific die pairing.
