The Sheldon 30 (#35555) is widely known as the "Marred Field" obverse. The variety pairs Obverse 11 with Reverse H. The namesake feature is a jagged, raised element in the field to the left of the hair—the result of a significant die break. The hair detail is notably fuller than on previous dies, and researcher William C. Noyes suggests that Liberty appears to be smiling, given the fullness of her cheek and the expression of her mouth. While many examples exhibit minor die-clash images upon close inspection and the reverse exhibits significant die rust, this remains an inherently attractive variety. It is one of the more frequently encountered die marriages for the 1794 issue, making it a favorite for collectors seeking a representative "Liberty Cap" specimen.
