The Sheldon 31 (#35558) is the second "Head of 1794" variety to carry the "Marred Field" imprimatur. While it does not share an obverse die with the Sheldon 30 (#35555), it is similarly marred.
Pairing Obverse 12 with Reverse I, the Sheldon 31 features a larger, more developed die crack to the left of Liberty’s hair. The hair detail is distinct, with the lowest lock cut more lightly, giving it the appearance of fading into the field. The reverse die is characterized by a notably long fraction bar extending beyond the denominator and a bulbous ribbon knot.
While the Sheldon 31 is a relatively common variety of the 1794 Liberty Cap Cent, two conditionally rare examples rank among the finest of all 1794 cents:
Beyond these condition census leaders, specialists can still find several PCGS MS63 or better examples to choose from.
