Sheldon 37 (#35576) is a scarce variety featuring Obverse 17 paired with Reverse N, the latter of which carried over from Sheldon 36 (#35573). Maris dubbed this the "Steigerwalt Variety," named after Charles Steigerwalt, one of the foremost numismatic experts of the era.
On this obverse, the date is spaced widely, with the 1 and 7 well-separated. Noyes identifies eight distinct hair locks, noting that the penultimate lock is unusually long and points downward. As an R-6 variety, the S-37 is one of the rarest collectible 1794 cents, with only approximately 21 examples known.
At the 2007 Early American Coppers (EAC) Convention in St. Louis, Missouri, collectors successfully assembled 12 examples of the Sheldon 37. This remarkable event marked the first time in 213 years that over half of the known population had been gathered in one place since leaving the Mint.
