Charles Morgan:

The 1794 Liberty Cap Cent, Sheldon 39, Marred Field

Like Sheldon 38 (#35579), the Sheldon 39 (#35582) utilizes Obverse 17. The marred field remains evident, characterized by the visible die chip behind Liberty’s hair. While this obverse is shared with S-38, S-40 (#35585), and NC-2 (#35663) and in its earlier state as Obverse 10 on S-30 (#35555) and S-31 (#35558), it was substantially altered prior to its use here. The most significant modification is the lowest hair curl, which was originally doubled and is now a single curl. This "Marred Field" combined with the single low hair curl is diagnostic for this die state.

The identifying features of this specific variety appear on Reverse N:

  • Wreath Details: There are six berries on the right and seven on the left.
  • Legend Placement: "ONE CENT" is positioned high within the wreath.
  • Ribbon Detail: The ribbons are wide and "sprawled" (per Breen), with the right ribbon terminating close to the final A in AMERICA.
  • Leaf Alignment: The left leaf in the pair below the T in CENT points directly toward the base of that letter.

Reverse N is unique to the S-39 variety.
