Charles Morgan:

The 1794 Liberty Cap Cent, Sheldon 41. Abrupt Hair

The Mint finally dispatched the marred field obverse die, introducing Obverse 18 for the Sheldon-41. This variety is often recognized by the "abrupt" hair locks located directly above and below the Liberty pole.

Key Identification Markers:

  • Obverse: The 1 and 4 of the date are spaced widely apart, while the 79 is punched closely together. The entire date is positioned low, nearly touching the denticles.
  • Reverse (Reverse Q): The berries on the wreath are notably small. The fraction bar is set low and is shorter than the width of the 100 denominator.
  • Die State: Advanced states exhibit a significant die crack originating at the rim, traveling through the AT in STATES and the wreath, finally terminating at the word ONE.
