Charles Morgan:

The 1794 Liberty Cap Cent, Sheldon 43, Short Bust

This variety introduces a new obverse die paired with the same reverse seen on Sheldon 42 (#35591).

Obverse Characteristics

The Short Obverse is defined by the absence of the loop at the bottom left of the bust truncation. Liberty’s hair is rendered with seven short, distinct locks, and the curls are notably thick and wavy. Additionally, the tops of the numerals 1 and 4 physically touch the bust above.

Reverse Die (Reverse R):

The use of Reverse R continues here, characterized by the faint "ES" and "OF."

This variety is particularly noted for its dramatic progression of heavy die cracks:

  • Early State: As seen in the Clapp Collection (ANS) example, a faint, thin crack splits the "U" in UNITED.
  • Late State: This crack becomes dominant, thickening as it extends through the wreath, touching the "C" in CENT, and finally terminating at the "A" in STATES.

Several other ancillary cracks are also visible on this reverse die.
