The Sheldon-47 (#35606) marks the return of the Short Bust of Liberty, a head style distinguished most notably by what is missing: the loop typically found beneath the bust truncation. In standard varieties, this loop hangs over the "79" and merges with the hair on the left; here, however, the truncation’s left edge stops abruptly, leaving a clear gap before it ever reaches the tresses.
While the Short Bust also appeared on the earlier Sheldon-43 (#35594), the Sheldon-47 is distinguished by a number of features. On the S-43, the tips of the "1" and "4" in the date crowd the design, touching the hair and bust respectively. On the Sheldon-47 (identified by Sheldon as Obverse 21), the top flag of the "1" is blunted, creating a distinct separation from the hair. Similarly, the "4" is placed apart from the bust truncation, and the "9" features a noticeably wider aperture. Further distinguishing this obverse are the upper two locks of Liberty’s hair, which end in bulbous, blunt terminations, and a unique doubled denticle located immediately to the left of the "1."
Matching this portrait is Reverse V, characterized by a wreath bearing six berries on each side. The ribbon assembly is shifted off-center to the left, featuring a right ribbon end that is both frayed and split. On typical examples, a fine die crack provides a final diagnostic, tracing a path from the border to the first "A" in AMERICA. Though this specific obverse would carry forward to Sheldons 48 (#35705), 49 (#35609), and the rare NC-9 (#35675), it would undergo significant retooling before its next deployment.
