However, PCGS disagrees with that assessment; this feature has been recognized by advanced collectors since Lyman Low described the coin in the 1907 Zug sale. When the piece reappeared in the 1966 Stearns sale, catalogers also noted the mark, describing it as "tiny, short, fine..." In that catalog, the coin was graded AU55, a conclusion with which PCGS now concurs.

The 1794 Liberty Cap Cent, Sheldon 51, Long Locks

Sheldon 51 (#35615) pairs the new Obverse 23 with our "old friend" Reverse X, which debuted on the Sheldon 49 (#35609). Like its predecessor, this scarce Rarity-5 variety is characterized by finely engraved hair detail; however, the strands on S-51 are notably longer, extending approximately 80% of the way toward the left tip of the pileus (Liberty cap). This specific example represents a late die state, featuring a prominent crack from the rim through the 17 of the date.
