Charles Morgan:

The 1794 Liberty Cap Cent, Sheldon 56, Office Boy Reverse

The Sheldon-56 (#35630) represents the final deployment of Obverse 26 and the sole appearance of Reverse Z. By this stage, the die cracks carried over from earlier marriages have fully matured, and the die periphery has begun to sink. However, it is the reverse die that proves the most fascinating. Nicknamed the "Office Boy Reverse," the die is notable for its crude depiction of the wreath and the awkward, "akimbo" positioning of the lettering. Several "bungled" diagnostics define this reverse: the TA in STATES touch, and the F in OF is spaced far apart and set too high. The A is positioned so far from MERICA that one would be forgiven for reading it as a separate word. Likewise, the E in ONE is isolated and set significantly high. It is as if a young apprentice was handed the master's tools and set out to make mischief.
