Charles Morgan:

The 1794 Liberty Cap Cent, Sheldon 63, Fallen 4

Known colloquially as the S-63, "Fallen 4" variety (#35651), the name is actually a bit of a misnomer. In reality, the impression of a "fallen" 4 is created by a misplaced "9," which crowds the final digit and sits slightly higher than both the "1" and the "4."

Aesthetically, this variety is a fascinating disaster: LIBERTY is punched remarkably high, nearly touching the dentils, while the "LI" shows an awkward separation that fails to follow the expected curvature seen on other varieties. The date is heavily repunched, most notably on the "4." A distinct metal spur juts toward the "4," with smaller spurs extending toward the end of the pole. The reverse is characterized by heavy, pronounced dentils and a bottom right leaf that appears only as a faint, ghostly outline. Additionally, the right point of the fraction bar clearly touches the ribbon. Once seen, this erratic and unmistakable variety is not easily forgotten.
