PCGS Registry Sets on Display this Summer

-

For a number of years, I’ve been organizing displays of PCGS Registry sets for the Florida United Numismatists, Long Beach Expo, and American Numismatic Association coin conventions. I’ve had the pleasure of exhibiting some wonderful collections from the Classics to Modern issues to the esoteric.

Many of these collections are still current, while others have been retired and sold. All, in their own way, have been noteworthy. Some of the collections were displayed publicly for the very first time and perhaps for the last. Here are just a few that I have had the privilege to offer for the public’s enjoyment:

Simpson — Lincoln Cents Off-Metal Strikes, Circulation Strikes (1943-1944), multiple award winner and Hall of Fame

Dale Friend — Early Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1794-1839), multiple award winner

Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor Collection — Barber Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1892-1915), multiple award winner and Hall of Fame, retired

R.Hesselgesser — Early Dollars Die Variety Set with Silver Plugs by Bolender & Bowers/Borckardt, Circulation Strikes (1794-1803), multiple award winner, retired

Coronet Collection — Morgan Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921), award winner, retired

TomBender — $3 Gold with Major Varieties and 1855-S, Proof (1854-1889), multiple award winner

Superior Galleries — $4 Gold, Proof (1879-1880), multiple award winner, retired

ErasmusHall — 1968-Present Proof Set, multiple award winner and Hall of Fame

Dwight N. Manley — Massachusetts Silver Shilling Design Set (1652-1682), multiple award winner, retired

At the ANA this summer we’ll be displaying two more great collections, which we will also carry forward to the September Long Beach Expo. These collections are very different from each other, yet both exhibit amazing quality and eye appeal.

The Winged Liberty’s Color of Money "Fireball Rainbow" Lincolns is a collection comprised of circulation strike and proof cents. But these are not Full Red examples. These are coins with blazing color. The owner, Paul A. Hubanks, took five years to build these two beautiful sets. He’s passionate about naturally-toned, colorful coins, and it shows in this stunning collection. In the circulation strike set, his 1957-D is graded MS67BN, one of only three known in this condition. Another one of his favorites is the exquisite 1914 matte proof, which is graded PR66BN. Paul’s 1909-1958 basic set has been nominated for Best Digital Album for 2016 and is currently leading in votes. Click here to view the album. Prepare to be impressed.

Also on display is the phenomenal Legend Collection of Liberty Seated Dollars. This is, hands down, the finest Seated Dollar set ever assembled. The set lacks the 1870-CC and only because the very discerning owner has not found an example worthy of the set. Bruce Morelan is well-known in the numismatic community for building high quality classic coin sets. His Hall of Fame Trade Dollar circulation strike set is a good example. We now have the privilege of displaying his Seated Dollars, another Hall of Fame set. The set is filled with pedigreed examples such as Garrett, Starr, Carter, Hayes, Childs, Stack, Share, Norweb, Fairfield, and others. And, many of the coins are Top Pops, the finest example graded. Bruce’s favorites include his 1848 PCGS MS66, which is a unique Top Pop. This is finest example known of this rare low mintage date. It was held in the Garrett collection for nearly a century until Stacks auctioned it in 1976. It later appeared in the famous Fairfield collection. His 1870-S PCGS MS62 is another unique Top Pop and is a member of the PCGS Million Dollar Coin Club. It is the James A. Stack specimen and is not only the finest known, but also the only uncirculated specimen of this ultra-rarity.

If you are planning to attend either the summer ANA in Anaheim or the Long Beach Expo in September, I invite you to stop by the PCGS booths to enjoy these wonderful sets and pick up a complimentary brochure for each collection. These sets are perfect examples of collectors who aspire to greatness.
