PCGS CoinFacts Update
In 1903, the San Francisco Mint struck coins across seven denominations. PCGS Set Registry Update
When gold was discovered in South Africa, that country's then-President Paul Kruger established a mint in Pretoria in 1890. The mint wasn't functional until 1892, and its coins featured a likeness of Kruger on the obverse. By 1910, the fragmented regions of South Africa became an independent union under the British Crown. The first circulating coins in South Africa under the British King George V were struck at the Pretoria Mint in 1923 and included the gold sovereign, half sovereign, three bronze denominations, and five silver coins. The Pretoria Mint also issued about 655 exceptionally high-quality proof sets. The eight-coin sets graded by PCGS are valued at about $5,000. The beautiful 1923 PCGS PR65 silver 2-1/2 Shillings shown above is part of the 1923 South African Proof Set that PCGS recently listed.
Additional sets from various countries have been added, so please feel free to browse the PCGS Set Registry when you have a chance and you may find there is a set for almost anyone to build.
